Statement on recent hate crime

Writer's picture: Migrant Minority Ethnic CouncilMigrant Minority Ethnic Council

The Migrant and Minority Ethnic Thinktank strongly condemns the recent hate crime against Takura Makoni in Finaghy, South Belfast. The graffiti on his home with the message "Taura [sic] not welcome" highlights the intolerance and racism still present in our society. Despite this, Takura Makoni has shown resilience and grace in the face of hatred, serving as an inspiration. We stand with Takura, his family, and all victims of such acts, offering unwavering support and condemning all forms of racism and discrimination. We are dedicated to promoting diversity, equality, and respect within our communities and call for prioritising hate crime legislation and the implementation of the Racial Equality Strategy to combat injustices. Together, we will work towards a society where everyone feels safe, valued, and accepted.
